Talks between Barcelona and Ousmane Dembele‘s representatives over a contract renewal officially begun on Tuesday, but no progress was made in the first meeting between the two parties.
Dembele‘s contract with Barcelona runs until 2022, but the Blaugrana are not willing to let him depart on a free transfer despite being aware that negotiations may go on for some time.
Barcelona are willing to extend the forward’s contract but, in the event that they reach no agreement with his agents, they will cash in on him this summer.
If Dembele does not agree to renewing his contract or leaving for another club this summer, Barcelona are willing to leave him in the stands, something which they have already made him aware of
The Frenchman will be able to negotiate his future with other clubs from January 2022, while Barcelona are keen to lower his salary which is considerably high.
Could offload Dembele
Barcelona will not allow Dembele leave on a free transfer after having spent 105 million euros plus another 40m euros in variables to sign him from Borussia Dortmund.
Dembele is in no rush to make a final decision as he is currently fully focused on the 2020 European Championship, with France being the favourites to win the tournament.
The Frenchman showed signs of improvement last year under Ronald Koeman after struggling to rediscover his form in the previous campaign, mainly due to his numerous injuries.
