Barcelona | Champions League Barcelona paired with Juventus
Following last season’s humbling by Bayern Munich, Barcelona will return to the Champions League to face Juventus, Dynamo Kiev and Ferencvaros in Group G.
This will bring football fans the latest edition of the Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo rivalry.
This will be the forth Champions League season with a Messi vs Ronaldo matchup.
The first came in 2007/08 in the semi finals, with Ronaldo‘s Manchester United winning 1-0 on aggregate.
The second was the following season in the final, when Messi scored in Barcelona 2-0 win over the English side in Rome.
The third was in 2010/11 when Ronaldo was already at Real Madrid and they met in a Clasico semi-final, with Messi again scoring as Barcelona progressed 3-1 on aggregate.
They’ve never, therefore, met in the group stages before now.
In this group, Ronaldo‘s Juventus will be the toughest challenge for the Blaugrana, especially as they have reinforced their team over the summer.
This matchup will also see Arthur Melo and Miralem Pjanic face their former clubs after crossing this divide during the summer.
Dynamo Kiev may not be the star-studded team they were in the late 1990s, yet the Ukrainian giants represent a difficult challenge for Barcelona and a team they could drop costly points against.
Then, Barcelona will hope to take maximum points from the two matches against Champions League debutants Ferencvaros of Hungary.
Barcelona have won their group for each of the past 13 seasons and will hope to do so again.
