Koeman: Depay hasn't signed yet, but he's close

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has confirmed that Memphis Depay is edging closer to completing a transfer to the Camp Nou, though it isn’t 100 percent finalised yet.

Koeman, who was speaking at an unveiling of a statue of his father in Gronigen, stated that he was excited at the prospect of working with Depay once again, after their time together in the Dutch national team.

“Memphis [Depay] has said something about his future which I can confirm,” Koeman said.

“As far as I know, the move is well on its way. Although he hasn’t signed yet, it is close. I wanted to complete the deal in January and if he comes it is great for us.”

Koeman‘s comments come after Depay himself revealed that the news was close to completion during the Netherlands’ press conference at Euro 2020 on Wednesday.

“Everyone knows that I have been negotiating with Barcelona for some time.” Depay said.

“I want to play with Ronald Koeman. Now is the time to wait, but soon there will be news.”

The Barcelona coach also went on to comment about why Giorginio Wijnladum ending up choosing to sign for Paris Saint-Germain instead of Barcelona.

“I spoke with Gini [Wijnaldum] about signing him and in the end he made a decision,” Koeman confirmed. “It had to do with Barcelona‘s situation.”
