FC Barcelona – La Liga Offering a three-year extension
Ronald Araujo could be the next Barcelona player to renew his contract at the Camp Nou. The Catalans are looking to extend the Uruguayan’s contract, which currently runs until 2023, until 2026.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Gerard Pique, Frenkie de Jong and Clement Lenglet all signed renewals last week and their attention has now turned to Araujo.
The 21-year-old defender has been a regular in the first team this season. That change of status means that his release clause automatically rose from 100 million to 200 million euros, but they are keen to tie him down to a longer-term deal. Talks are believed to be going well with some details still needing to be resolved.
The Catalans signed Araujo for 1.7 million euros two years ago. Ernesto Valverde was the first to call him up to the first team and handed him his debut in 2019/20. Since then, Araujo has improved consistently and established himself in the first team. Their failure to sign Eric Garcia or another centre-back has no relation to their backing of Araujo, and the club see him as higher up the pecking order than Samuel Umtiti.
It’s thought that Araujo will start against Juventus in Turin in this week’s Champions League tie, with Gerard Pique suspended after being sent off against Ferencvaros. Juventus will provide the Uruguayan with a tough test, though he performed very well against Sevilla in the 1-1 draw earlier this season.
